Frequently asked questions

Is the app in English?

No. Diccionario is a monolingual Spanish dictionary: it explains Spanish words in Spanish, and its interface is in Spanish too. It does not translate into English. If you need translations, a bilingual dictionary will serve you better than this one.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The complete dictionary is installed with the app and nothing is ever downloaded again. It works just the same on a plane, on the metro or with no signal at all.

Why does it take up so much space?

For the same reason: it is around 130 MB because all 100,000-plus words travel inside the app instead of being requested from a server. It is a one-off payment in storage in exchange for never depending on the network.

Where do the definitions come from?

From the Spanish Wiktionary, the free dictionary edited by the Wikimedia community. They are distributed under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence and were extracted with kaikki.org. The app credits all three sources on its information screen.

A word is missing, or a definition has a mistake

Because the content comes from Wiktionary, the most lasting fix is to edit it there: the entry improves for everyone, and the change reaches the app with the next dictionary update.

If you would rather not edit it yourself, write to me and I will look into it. Bear in mind that some mistakes are in the source rather than in the app, so I cannot always fix them directly.

Does it work on iPad?

It installs and runs, but in compatibility mode: this first version is designed for iPhone. A version built for iPad is left for later.

Which version of iOS do I need?

iOS 18 or later.

Is anything I search for stored?

Your recent searches are stored on your device alone, so they can be shown to you the next time you open the app, and you can clear them whenever you like with “Borrar todas” or by swiping left on an individual word. They are not sent to any server: the app collects no data and contains no analytics. The privacy policy explains this in detail.

Is it accessible?

The app respects the system text size, including the accessibility sizes, and its controls are labelled for VoiceOver. If something does not work properly with the accessibility settings you use, write to me: that is exactly the kind of bug I want to hear about.
